The lives of the people of the culture and their food in England have many connections. They have several different feasts and holidays, some similar to the United States. England celebrates many holidays, festivals, and celebrations each month. One unique festival in the month of March is Crufts. It is an annual British dog show that started in 1928. This famous dog show is held at NEC in Birmingham. I definitely have heard of this event because I’ve seen it on social media, mostly on Snapchat.

In England, the British do celebrate many Christian holidays because this is one of the main religions. On April 23rd, England celebrates the patron saint of St. George. This day is a national holiday; St. George was a Roman solider who killed a dragon while trying to save a princess. They also do celebrate the Queens birthday. Even though she was born in April, they celebrate her special day in June because of the weather.

Just about every person has heard of the famous “Fish and Chips.” Throughout the towns of England, there are shops called chippy or chipper. The dish became popular in the later 19th century. The first shops were family owned businesses but now are all over the United Kingdom. During World War II, fish and chips were a family’s weekly diet because the food was not rationed. “Fish and chips are a valuable source of protein, fiber, iron and vitamins, providing a third of the recommended daily allowance of vitamins for men and nearly half for women (Historic UK).” I’ve always known about fish and chips ever since I was little, but since I researched more about it maybe some day I will actually get it try it!

  1. Being a dog lover Crufts sounds like something I would enjoy!! Fish and Chips is also something I have always heard so much about and never tried. Hoping that when I visit England myself one day, I can check that off my list.
